In the world of constant Internet availability and growing connection possibilities Social Media seem to become a inseperable part of everyday life. They definitely change our perception of the world itself but also the way we go through life. Without this powerful tool young musicians used to work their asses off to be noticed and recognized; visible in general. Is the online revolution of any help for them?
Let's have a closer look at what a talented young musicians had to do before to achieve their dream and make a career. So, for starters any open mic in the neighbourhood was a must stop every week. They would prepare covers for days or make them on the spot to make the small, but still bigger than the family at home, crowd be amused. Hopefully, at some point someone important would show up and notice the incredible skill of a small town star.
Obviously there were also the school contests and town competitions for young talents. That was a great shot but not the only one they would take, as there was still reaching out to the label, wishing blissfully somewhere deep inside that they would be good enough to be signed and step on the road to greatness and success. So they would record videos or mixtapes of their covers and original songs and send them to the producing giants. How many of them would make it? Good question...
Since the Internet came along the whole new range of possibilities emerged. YouTube opened the door for prospective musicians to reaching the larger crowd - well, much larger. Helpfull for getting noticed, isn't it? You get hundreds of thousends likes and shares, flattering comments and you're basically on the right way to draw attention of a producer or a label.
But YouTube without social media could not be of such help for them. First, there was MySpace, flawless idea, unfortunatelly didn't last as long as we could have expected. No reason to worry, though, with Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and tons of others YouTube video can spread wider than ever and if you add so widely popular and commonly used hashtag... well let's just say that the information, or in this case a video, can literally travel around the world.
So, such a range of possibilities, simple at the same time, but... Yes, there's got to be a 'but'. How to select content? Or rather how to stend out from the Mount Everest of various content stored online? Be original? Is that enough? Unfortunately not always... Sometimes the time needs to play its part as well, sometimes having thousends of 'friends' on Facebook is a good start.
Thre's still a question though, how to get signed? Just posts and likes and retweets aren't enough. Well, there's the trick... what if there's another way than record label? What if you could do it all by yourself? Sounds tempting... and expensive. Still, maybe worth a shot?
